Our son Ollie is autistic and is super sensory -- here are five items that he uses on a daily basis to regulate himself! 1. Enclosed Indoor Trampoline Never did I think I was going to own a trampoline -- honestly, I'm still very hesitant about getting a large outdoor one, but time will tell. Ollie used to spend a LOT of time bouncing on his knees, and one day it dawned on me: a trampoline would be so much better! Ollie spends a lot of time regulating inside this on a daily basis. We bought...
I would like to say I have a love-hate relationship with our pool after the first three months. Man have I learned a lot about pool maintenance in a short period of time! One of the things we knew about this house when we purchased it is the poor water: we have a lot of sediment in our water and iron. Let's just say our toilets are only non-orange when guests come over? It's an exhausting process trying to get rid of iron stains! Now, eventually, we plan to dig a new well (we know that our...
This post is probably for the most niche of niches, but I decided that there are probably more people out there living similar lives than we think, so if you have an autistic toddler and are working from home: this post is for you! Over the past month, I've had to start working from home and have found a few tips and tricks along the way to keep things going smoothly for both my work and my kids, specifically my son, Oliver, who requires more individual needs met than my daughter on a day to...
Because both of our children have autism, I figured it was time to do a quick info session regarding it for the blog! Autism Spectrum Disorder now affects one in 160 people as of 2021 and the question can become whether or not this is a higher developing disability, or if it is that we have created much more awareness around the disorder that it's becoming easier to diagnose. The spectrum of autism is not linear. Both my daughter, age six, and my son, age three, are autistic but are vastly...
During the pandemic, we have had a difficult time finding places to bring Oliver. He won't wear a mask but is over the age of two. We discovered that the National Aquarium does not mandate masks for those under the age of five! So we took a day trip as a family to see how a sensory experience like an aquarium would work for Oliver. We are very lucky to live within driving distance of a national aquarium! The drive took us roughly an hour and a half and we parked about a block away from the...
